Los Angeles-based artist Kelly Kleinschrodt's exhibition, on display simultaneously at Crisp London Los Angeles's spaces in England and Westwood, featured photo and video work that spans subjects ranging from the materiality of objects to the notion of the artist's role as a "revealer of mystic truths."
The photographs comprising this two-continent show are drawn from three series, fabrication, nami, and infinite storage. All three groups document and recontextualize objects with mesmerizing focus on the presentation of light and surface. In fabrication, the woven threads in shiny backdrops scavenged from earlier shoots create a dot matrix that the viewer's eyes follow in and out of folds and shadows. Positive and negative space is mapped out by the high contrast between the material's bleached-out rises and its inscrutable crevices. In fabrication I (grey), the ridges converge and recede in a hole so black that the cloth is no longer visible -- an effect that questions the fabric's origin and leaves one wondering whether the cloth grows out of the darkness or tumbles into it from the sides.
Video works included in the exhibit also approach emptiness and mystery. D(us)t I - III, displayed in a row, suggest snowstorms, or perhaps constellations recorded with a shaky camera, but are in fact pictures of flurrying dust. A narrator delivers grunts and utterances such as "time and the mind are synonymous." Dust, space, surfaces, and holes: the abstraction of concrete matter and the objectification of emptiness become means to the same end in Kleinschrodt's investigations.
