Circus GalleryYou Can Heal Your Life
Exhibition Dates: Thursday, January 7, 2010 - Saturday, February 6, 2010
Reception: Thursday, January 7, 2010, 7-9pmThe art works in this show seek to address issues of religion, spirituality and self-help through performance, sculpture, painting, video and printmaking. The title has been lifted from Louse L. Hays best selling and controversial self-help book You Can Heal Your Life, which was first published in the late 1980s - an era awash in New Age ideas. Adherents of the New Age movement believe that a spiritual era is dawning in which individuals and society will be transformed. Some of the artists in this show are connecting with or questioning new age beliefs and others are directly engaging with religious iconography and dogma.

Reception: January 16, 2010, 6-8pmAnnouncing the gallery's first exhibition of 2010, Gerald Incandela: New Photographic Drawings. Incandela emerged as a photographer and filmmaker in the mid-1970s, at a time of profound and restless investigation of photography and its processes. Incandela's distinctive use of composite negatives and selective application of developer and fixer by hand, in a drawing like gesture, transformed the monocular vision of the camera into a painterly medium. In the words of critic Klaus Kertess, "Incandela subverted photography with its own tools and brought focus to the dialogue between the eye of the artist, the eye of the camera, and the eye of the viewer."...more info

Reception: January 9, 2009, 5-8pm am interested in making art which parallels the way that smells, words, images numbers, memories, ideas and fantasies all rumble around in our brains at any given moment. Our lives involve many contradictions: I hope to reflect this complexity in the work. I do this through the means of drawing, painting, installations and lenticular print editions.
My perennial focus is in finding the connections between unlike images. By consciously revealing these links, I hope to help with the integration of these contractions and opposites.

Reception: January 15, 2010, 7-10pmJAUS is very pleased to presents LUBE, a three woman exhibition curated by artist Martin Durazo featuring work by Samantha Magowan, Tameka Norris and Kiki Seror. One of the main objectives for this exhibition is to create a forum for the exploration and discussion of ideas related to objectification, the gaze, and ownership of sexuality. The works exhibited were selected as a challenge to the conservatism in the Los Angeles visual art community in recent years. The title suggests an antidotal spin for a society of artists, curators, and critics in need of moral and emotional lubrication. ...more info

Long Gone
Exhibition Dates: Saturday, January 16, 2010 - Saturday, February 6, 2010
Reception: January 16, 2009, 7-10pmOwen Smith's lurid figurative art often depicts the basic, sometimes base elements of life. Inspired by popular culture and artwork of the first half of the 20th century, his works are reminiscent of the robust style and subject matter of Depression Era art. Smith's paintings mirror our current social and economic climate. His archetypal characters inhabit the boxing rings, construction sites, flophouses and burlesque theaters of urban America. Like the characters from Film Noir, Smith's subjects seem to survive on their wits, sexual allure and violent tendencies, trapped by life, circumstances and social roles. Smith paints in oils with rich colors and shadings that emphasize movement and volumetric form. Smith also creates large charcoal drawings. His tight compositions heighten the sense of tension between the figures. Smith enjoys playing the line between serious art and kitsch, making comments about society at the same time he is having fun with a romanticized view of America's tough past. ...more info

Exhibition Dates: Saturday, January 16, 2010 - Saturday, February 6, 2010
Reception: January 16, 2009, 7-10pmPainter, illustrator and author Mark Todd was first inspired to become a visual artist by the comic books and adventure movies that captured his imagination as a child. These realms of fantasy still populate his art, a body of work in which superheroes and villains are altered but still archetypal. In pieces that blend images, words, and iconography-and that are both vividly action-packed and cleanly minimal-classic Silver Age comic book covers are the subjects of Todd's forthcoming show "Juggernaut: New Comic Paintings and Collage Works on Paper."...more info

You'll Be Sorry When I'm Dead
Exhibition Dates: Saturday, January 16, 2010 - Saturday, February 6, 2010
Reception: January 16, 2010, 7-11pmIn the words of Bad Otis Link, his new show consists of works "all done wrong, perfect for our current atmosphere." In this show, Link revisits ink and watercolor on Bristol. "I worked with these mediums in the '80s and recently realized that I miss this style" states the artist, who puts a slightly different twist on the pieces, using more line work and less stipple than in his previous works. The show will also consist of acrylic on hardboard and some three dimensional pieces: puppets and experimental foam work. "You'll be Sorry When I'm Dead..." is inspired, in title only, by a recent death hoax of a close friend and even more so, something Link's mother always told him when he was young. Though there is no consistent theme to this show, Link's work has (believe it or not) an environmental message. "I am somewhat of a realist, not in my art but in observation. I continue my attempts to illustrate how, as humans, we are so out of synch with the rest of the natural universe, noticing our human flaws and our collective mental illness and denials of the obvious, all that is wrong. I also like to inject odd little creature, birds (messengers in many ancient myths) and structures I would like to inhabit into the work" states Link....more info
