About Mak Center

Since its inception in 1994, the MAK Center for Art and Architecture at the Schindler House has been making a unique contribution to the artistic and cultural landscape of Los Angeles. Offering a year-round schedule of exhibitions, lectures, symposia, and concerts, the MAK Center proudly presents programming that challenges conventional notions of architectural space and relationships between the creative arts.

Twenty-three artists working in the vein of California's conceptual art movement have each been commissioned to create a new work that critically responds to the medium of the billboard and interprets its role in the urban landscape. The first artist to be featured in Locus Remix, takes as her main subject Kukulkan's Pyramid in the sacred Mayan city of Chichén-Itzá in the Yucatan Pennisula in Mexico. Focusing on a potent relic of a non-western, vanished culture, Grinnan re-creates a contemporary interpretation of that historical site. The sacred urban architecture of the Mayans is spun into objects that reflect contemporary popular space and culture. The Isle: A Reading of the Island of Kish in the Persian Gulf

Pages has focused on a series of ongoing projects relating to an island in the Persian Gulf called Kish; the exhibition presents two of these projects. Sunset Cinema is an architectural proposal that responds to the Kish Documentary Film Festival initiated by an Iranian film director on the Island in 2000.
